Six killed, 10 injured in Pakistan's helicopter crash

A chartered helicopter crashed in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday afternoon, killing six people on board while injuring 10 others, police officials said.

The incident happened at about 1 pm local time when a helicopter chartered by a private oil exploration and production company Mari Petroleum crashed in the Shewa area of North Waziristan district of the province, District Police Officer Rokhanzeb Khan news agency.

Six people, including two Russian pilots of the aircraft, were killed in the unfortunate incident, said the official, adding that 10 others sustained injuries, including staff of the private company.

The incident occurred due to a technical fault in the aircraft immediately after it took off, according to local government officials. The engine of the helicopter caught fire before it hit the ground and crashed, officials added.

The cause of the technical fault is still unknown and is being investigated by the relevant authorities.

Following the incident, rescue teams and security personnel reached the area and cordoned it off.

"Of the total casualties, 34 deaths were from the three districts in the Kathmandu Valley,"

The Philippines recorded 354 rabies cases and deaths from January to September 14 this year, a 23 per cent increase from the 287 cases tallied in the same period last year, according to data from the Philippines' Department of Health (DOH).

"All confirmed rabies cases are fatal," the agency said on Friday, adding that this year's number "may still vary with incoming reports."

In August, the agency said that at least 10 regions across the country, including Metro Manila, have shown a spike in rabies cases,news agency reported.

The landslide, which occurred during heavy downpours on Thursday afternoon, has severely hampered rescue operations due to a lack of communication access and challenging terrain, a senior rescuer said on Saturday.

Abdul Malik, head of the provincial search and rescue office, said that efforts to locate two remaining miners were ongoing, although their condition remains unknown,news agency reported.

"The latest data shows that 12 people have lost their lives, and 11 others are receiving medical treatment for their injuries. Rescuers have identified the location of the two remaining miners and are working to retrieve them from the mine shaft," Malik said.

Four people, including two young men aged 18 and 19, died in a two-vehicle crash in the rural area of Australia's New South Wales (NSW), NSW police said in a statement on Saturday.

The police said that emergency services were called to the scene at about 9.20 p.m. local time on Friday on Newell Highway, approximately 35 km south of NSW's city Dubbo, following reports of a multi-vehicle crash.

Officers attended the scene and found that a Toyota Hilux and a Toyota Hiace van had collided.

Norway will grant collective protection to fewer Ukrainians arriving from six areas deemed safe by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration, the government said.

If no individual need for protection exists, applications from new asylum seekers from these areas will be rejected, it said.

For the past two and a half years, most Ukrainians fleeing to Norway have been given temporary protection without individual assessment, but now applications from safe regions of Ukraine will be evaluated under regular asylum regulations, news agency reported.
