Car rams through Germany Christmas market killing 2, injuring 60; Saudi man arrested

A Saudi man was arrested after a car rammed into a Christmas market in Magdeburg, central Germany, leaving two people dead, including a child, and over 60 others injured, according to Saxony-Anhalt's state premier.

The incident occurred on Friday evening when the market was bustling with crowds gathered for Christmas shopping.

Condemning the attack, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz took to X and posted, "My thoughts are with the victims and their families. We stand by their side and by the side of the people of Magdeburg."

Speaking to the reporters, Saxony-Anhalt state premier Reiner Haseloff revealed that the suspected driver is a Saudi Arabian doctor, who has been residing in Germany since 2006 and working in the region.

Of the injured, 15 are reported to be in critical condition, raising concerns that the death toll may increase, he added.

Tripura Police have detained six Bangladeshi nationals including two children and two women, after they came into the state from Delhi, as they were trying to return to their country clandestinely, officials said.

A police official said that the six Bangladeshi nationals were arrested from a private guest house in Khowai district.

“The Bangladeshi nationals came to the bordering Khowai district from Delhi and briefly stayed in the private lodge before returning to their country with the help of Indian touts. They are residents of Feni district of Bangladesh,” the official told the media.

He said that the Bangladeshi nationals during preliminary interrogations confessed that a few months back they went to Delhi in search of jobs and illegally made Aadhaar, PAN, and EPIC cards. Police seized these fake cards.

A Sydney police task force targeting organised crime syndicates has arrested 33 people and seized drugs worth millions of US dollars.

Police in the state of New South Wales (NSW) on Friday said that 33 people had been charged by detectives from Task Force Lupin since it was secretly established in July to address an escalating conflict between organised crime networks hailing from Asia.

In addition to the arrests, police seized prohibited drugs worth more than 10 million Australian dollars (6.2 million US dollars) as well as 600,000 Australian dollars (372,000 dollars) in cash, seven firearms and more than 20 dedicated encrypted criminal communication devices.

Detectives executed over 35 search warrants and identified three clandestine methamphetamine labs, two in western Sydney and one in the remote town of Mollyan over 300 kilometers northwest of the city.

The Patna Police have arrested a man on charges of causing a disturbance during the 70th BPSC Combined Examination held at the Bapu Examination Centre in Kumhrar locality of Patna on December 13, the police said.

The arrested person, identified as Manish Kumar from Jagatpur in Supaul district, was allegedly involved in creating chaos during the examination.

Patna Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Atulesh Jha confirmed the arrest and said that several question papers missing from the examination hall were recovered from Manish Kumar.

"We scanned the CCTV footage from the Bapu Examination Centre and identified the alleged candidate, Manish Kumar. The missing question papers were found in his possession and an Android phone," Jha said.

The incident is from the BIT Mesra Outpost area of Ranchi. It is said that the child studying in a nursery in a school in the area informed family members about the dirty act of the school cab driver.

A smuggler identified as Lalrin Chhana (28) was also arrested in connection with the seizure of the foreign cigarettes contained in 600 cases.

The entire seized consignment and the detainee have been handed over to the police department for further legal proceedings.

The Cyber Crime teams of the Gurugram Police have arrested 16 criminals who defrauded 6,103 people across India of Rs 71.15 crore.

The arrests were made from October 24 to December 13 acting on various complaints, police said on Wednesday.

The arrested were identified as Dipanshu and Chand Shah, Dheeraj Joshi, Pranav, Ashish, Sahil, Kamlesh Sharma, Vasudev alias Basu Sharma, Chagoram, Gulab Singh, Rohtash Saini, Kartik Saini, Vinod Kumar, Sonu Kumar and Durgesh.

Of the total complaints against the accused, 13 were registered in Haryana, including three in Gurugram.

A crime branch team of the Gurugram Police has arrested three accused for allegedly trying to rob a police team at gunpoint on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, officials said.

The police team headed by Inspector Vishwagaurav, Incharge Crime Branch Sector-39, Gurugram received information regarding three accused with weapons trying to rob the people near DPG College Sector-72, Gurugram.

Acting promptly on the information, the police formed a special team. The team reached the spot, where three accused stopped the police vehicle by showing a torch and tried to rob them at gunpoint.

The police team then overpowered the trio accused, along with illegal weapons.

In a conviction success for CBI investigators, a man who took a Rs 3.5 lakh housing loan on the basis of forged documents and failed to repay the money to a bank was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 10,000, by a court in Uttar Pradesh, an official said on Tuesday.

The Court of Special Judicial Magistrate, CBI cases, Lucknow, sentenced loan applicant Sardar Ahmad Khan on Monday in the bank fraud case.

After the conclusion of the trial in respect of the CBI charge sheet, the court found Sardar Ahmad Khan guilty and sentenced him accordingly.

The court accepted the evidence presented by the CBI to prove the use of forged documents by the convict for taking the loan of Rs 3.5 lakh in his own name from SBI, Rajapur Branch, Allahabad, a statement said.

Fake passport racket: Another contractual staff of Postal Department held in Bengal

Another contractual staff of the Postal Department was arrested from West Bengal on Tuesday in connection with arranging fake Indian passports for illegal Bangladeshi residents.

The person arrested has been identified as Taraknath Sen.

Sen is the second contractual staff attached to the Postal Department who was arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police during the last 48 hours.

On December 15, two people, namely Samaresh Biswas and Deepak Mondal, were arrested in connection with the fake passport racket. Mondal was also a contractual staff of the Postal Department.
