Policeman killed in attack on diplomats' convoy in Pakistan

A policeman was killed and three others were injured while escorting a group of diplomats travelling from Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province to the capital Islamabad on Sunday, Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

An advance scout police vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in Swat district of KP, which resulted in the casualty of the police, the ministry said in a statement.

The group of diplomats has returned safely to Islamabad, news agency reported, citing the statement.

Four employees of the Gaza-based health authorities were killed on Saturday in an Israeli airstrike targeting a warehouse in the city of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip, the health authorities said.

In a press statement, the health authorities said that four of its workers died and six others injured in the attack on their warehouse in the Musbah area, north of Rafah.

The statement added that ambulance crews are unable to reach the area to retrieve the bodies of the victims and treat the wounded due to ongoing Israeli shelling, news agency reported.

The Israeli army has not commented on the incident.

Pakistan reports three more polio cases, bringing total to 21 in 2024

Pakistan reported three new cases of polio in the country's Balochistan, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, bringing the total number of the disease-infected children to 21 since the beginning of this year, the health ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health confirmed that wild poliovirus type 1 was found in all three children who have been paralyzed by polio.

Expressing concern at the escalating number of children affected by the disease, the Prime Minister's Focal Person for Polio Eradication, Ayesha Raza Farooq, said that the government is determined to end the disease in the country,news agency reported.

"Every new case is a child with a name, a face, and a life that is forever altered by the crippling impact of polio," she said, adding that the disease is silently spreading in some areas of Balochistan and Sindh where parents do not administer the polio vaccine to their kids.

A trainee doctor has been arrested for allegedly making and distributing a "blacklist" of colleagues who are not participating in an ongoing walkout by junior doctors over the government's medical reform plan, officials said on Saturday.

The Seoul Central District Court issued an arrest warrant for the man, surnamed Jeong, Friday on charges of creating a list of doctors who either have not joined their striking colleagues or returned to work and distributing it online repeatedly, News Agency reported.

The list, created in July, contains names, phone numbers and other personal information of non-striking doctors and was allegedly distributed with malicious intent in violation of the act on the punishment against stalking crimes.

The ministry noted that 53 drones were destroyed in the Bryansk region, 18 in the Krasnodar region, and several others in the Kaluga, Tver and Belgorod, Smolensk, and Kursk regions, as well as near the Sea of Azov, according to news agency.

In the Tikhoretsk district of the Krasnodar region, about 1,200 people were evacuated after a fire caused by two falling drones, regional authorities said.

The process of extracting crude oil is ongoing from 21 wells at the outskirts of Qashqari, Angut, and Aaq Darya oil basins in the province and 25 more wells will soon be drilled and repaired at the mentioned areas, said Hamayoun Afghan, spokesman for the ministry, news agency reported.

During the processing of extracting crude oil, job opportunities were provided to 3,000 people, directly and indirectly, Afghan added.

Typhoon Yagi brought devastating winds and heavy rain, impacting farmlands across Myanmar. If farmers have difficulties replanting rice, they are urged to grow cash crops to reduce losses and generate funds for the next growing season, news agency reported, quoting the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar.

A team led by Ye Tint Tun, director general of Myanmar's Department of Agriculture, visited farms in the Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory to support post-flood farm recovery. They discussed managing crop loans, maintaining high-yielding crops by lowering input costs, analysing climate-resilient crops suitable for each region and addressing the needs of farmers, the report said.
