Kolkata, May 1 (Agency) : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday issued notice to Sheikh Sirajuddin, the absconding younger brother of now-suspended Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan, to appear for interrogation in connection with the recovery of arms and ammunition in Sandeshkhali.
On Wednesday morning, a team of CBI officials, escorted by CAPF personnel reached the residence of Sirajuddin and attached the notice for interrogation at the closed entrance gate there.
On April 26, firearms, ammunition, explosives and bombs were recovered from the residence of a close aide of Shahjahan at Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district in West Bengal.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which is investigating money laundering against Sirajuddin, had earlier issued a lookout notice against him.
On April 25, following a joint raid and search operations by CBI officials and the National Security Guard NSG), a huge cache of firearms, ammunition, explosives, and bombs was recovered.
Meanwhile, sources said that NSG, on Wednesday, submitted to the CBI a report on the nature of explosives seized from Sandeshkhali.
The CBI sleuths said that the report will be first submitted to the Basirhat Sub-divisional Court where a hearing in the matter is on.
On April 29, the ED counsel informed a special court of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Kolkata that a portion of the money that Shahjahan and his associates earned from land grabbing was used for purchasing firearms and ammunition.
As per the estimates of the CBI, the total value of the firearms and ammunition seized from Sandeshkhali amounted to over Rs 40 lakh.
