The National Service Scheme (NSS) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib organized an impactful awareness talk on Anaemia and its prevention as part of the Rashtriya Poshan Maah initiative. Dr. Anamika Soni and Dr. Abha interacted with 100 NSS volunteers to raise awareness about anaemia and its preventive measures. Dr. Monika Airi, Programme Officer, NSS, shared that the day-long workshop comprised pre-testing, a resource talk, post-testing, and an interactive discussion session. Dr. Anamika Soni, in her detailed presentation, shed light on the causes and consequences of anaemia, particularly among women and children. She discussed the different types of anaemia, including iron-deficiency anaemia, the most common form, and highlighted the severe effects it can have on health, such as fatigue, weakness, and impaired cognitive function. Dr. Soni also elaborated on the importance of early diagnosis and timely intervention to prevent severe complications, encouraging volunteers to actively spread awareness within their communities.
Dr. Abha focused on the dietary aspect of anaemia prevention, emphasizing the importance of iron-rich foods. She provided practical advice on incorporating foods such as leafy greens, legumes, nuts, seeds, and animal-based sources like liver and red meat into daily diets. Dr. Abha also discussed how Vitamin C enhances iron absorption and recommended including citrus fruits, tomatoes, and peppers in meals. She addressed common myths about iron-rich foods and provided tips on improving overall nutrition to combat anaemia effectively. Dr. Harneet Billing, Programme Coordinator, NSS, highlighted that this awareness drive is part of a month-long campaign aimed at addressing key concerns regarding nutritious food. The campaign will include school and community outreach programs, health camps, and awareness sessions to educate the public about balanced nutrition and anaemia prevention. Prof (Dr.) Pritpal Singh, Vice Chancellor said that the event marked a significant step in promoting community health, with volunteers taking an active role in spreading the message about anaemia prevention and nutritious eating habits.
