In recognition of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17th, the University School of Law organized a special event under the esteemed patronage of Prof. Pritpal Singh, Vice Chancellor. The event focused on the significance of this day and was followed by an outreach program on October 18th aimed at raising awareness and distributing essential items and clothes to underprivileged communities in nearby slum areas.
During the event, Prof. Sukhwinder Singh Billing, Dean Academic Affairs, highlighted this year’s theme, Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment. He emphasized that people living in poverty often face negative attitudes and discrimination. He noted how social maltreatment fosters institutional maltreatment, combining mistrust, disrespect, and discriminatory policies that deny fundamental human rights such as access to healthcare, education, housing, and legal identity. Dr. Navneet Kaur, the event In-charge, shared that the outreach program was designed to raise awareness of these communities’ rights. She remarked that daily experiences of injustice and dehumanization not only erode individuals' self-esteem but also rob them of their dignity and opportunity to escape poverty. She underscored that social and institutional maltreatment represents a catastrophic loss of human potential.
As part of the program, Amritpal Singh, along with students from the University, visited nearby slum areas to distribute food items, clothes, stationery, and other essentials. They engaged with the community to discuss various strategies to combat poverty. The efforts of the University School of Law were lauded by Vice Chancellor Prof. Pritpal Singh, who appreciated the department's commitment to social responsibility and community service. This initiative reflects the University's dedication to addressing social issues and its ongoing commitment to uplifting underprivileged sections of society.
