Swati Maliwal assault case: Supreme Court grants bail to Bibhav Kumar

The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s aide Bibhav Kumar in the Swati Maliwal assault case.

A Bench presided over by Justice Surya noted that Bibhav Kumar has been in jail for around 100 days and if released on bail, no prejudice will be caused to the investigation of the case, since the Delhi Police had already filed its charge sheet before the trial court post completion of the probe.

Imposing a slew of conditions, the apex court ordered that Kumar will not be restored to his position of Personal Secretary to the Delhi CM or given any official assignment in the Chief Minister’s Office.

The Delhi High Court has refused to quash the defamation case against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The court dismissed Kejriwal's plea challenging the ongoing defamation case filed by BJP Delhi leader Rajiv Babbar in 2019. Accusing Kejriwal and other AAP leaders of maligning the BJP, Babbar said the party was responsible for removing 30 lakh names from the Delhi electoral rolls, which mainly affected Bania, Muslim and other communities. .

Death toll from unprecedented Bangladesh flood rises to 67

The death toll from floods caused mainly by the onrush of upstream waters in parts of Bangladesh has risen to 67, including six women and 18 children, said the country's disaster response agency on Monday.

According to a new toll announced by the National Disaster Response Coordination Center under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, the country's three southeastern districts -- Feni, Cumilla and Noakhali -- are the worst-affected districts, with 54 people dead so far in the ongoing unprecedented floods of weeks.

Nearly 6 million people have been affected by the floodwaters that hit 11 of the country's 64 districts and caused colossal damage to life, property and standing crops, news agency reported.

Indian equity indices closed at a record high on Monday following a positive sentiment in the market.

At closing, the Sensex was up 194 points or 0.24 per cent at 82,559 and Nifty was up 42 points or 0.17 per cent at 25,278.

During the trading session, the Sensex and Nifty both made a new all-time high of 82,725 and 25,333 respectively.

The broader market trend was negative on Monday.

India’s coal production sees 6.48 pc growth at 384 MT in April-August

The coal production in India reached 384.08 million tonnes (MT) up to August in the current fiscal, a growth of 6.48 per cent compared to 360.71 MT during the same period in FY24, the government said on Monday.

According to the Ministry of Coal, the production of Coal India Limited (CIL) surged to 290.39 MT during the period of April-August, marking a growth of 3.17 per cent as compared to 281.46 MT during the corresponding period of last period.

Coal production from captive and other entities also showed remarkable growth, reaching 68.99 MT from April to August — a substantial 30.56 per cent growth compared to 52.84 MT in the same period of the previous year.

PM Modi-led Cabinet approves Rs 3,300 crore semiconductor unit

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Monday approved the proposal of Kaynes Semicon Pvt Ltd to setup a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat, with an investment of Rs 3,300 crore.

The proposed unit, under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), will produce nearly 60 lakh chips per day. The chips produced in this unit will cater to a wide variety of applications which include segments such as industrial, automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom and mobile phones, etc.

According to PM Modi, the country has the potential to fulfil the dream of developing a ‘Made in India’ chip for every piece of equipment. The first indigenously-developed chip is set to arrive in the country by the end of this year.

Japan's weather agency warned that extremely heavy rain could continue through Tuesday in northern and eastern Japan, noting localised downpours are hitting parts of northern to western Japan on Monday.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), atmospheric conditions are extremely unstable from northern through western Japan due to warm and damp air flowing into a rain front extending across the northern part of the country from the Sea of Japan.

The front is forecast to move southward and may bring extremely heavy localised downpours accompanied by thunder to northern and eastern Japan, reports news agency, quoting JMA.

Gujarat: 1,200 PG doctors go on strike, demand 40 pc stipend hike

Nearly 1,200 postgraduate doctors from the BJ Medical College here went on strike on Monday, demanding a 40 per cent increase in their stipend instead of 20 per cent recently announced by the Gujarat government.

The doctors have withdrawn from emergency services and OPD, protesting against the Gujarat government's failure to increase their stipend as promised.

The Gujarat government announced a 20 per cent increase in stipends for medical interns and resident doctors on August 31, 2024.

The state government implemented this stipend hike on April 1, 2024.

Revanth Reddy urges PM to declare Telangana floods national calamity

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare the heavy rain and floods in the state a national calamity.

The Chief Minister also requested the Prime Minister to personally visit the state to see the damages caused by rain and floods.

The floods caused loss of human lives and extensive damage to crops and property, he said, adding that railway tracks were washed away, several roads and lakes were breached while electricity poles were also damaged.

At a review meeting with state ministers and top officials here, Revanth Reddy asked Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari to write to the Prime Minister, requesting him to visit the flood-hit areas.
