Cardiovascular-disease (CVD) is responsible for deaths among two in three people with a high body mass index (BMI), according to a study.

The study comes as the global prevalence of obesity more than doubled over the past four decades, currently affecting more than a billion individuals.

“Notably, 67.5 per cent of deaths related to high body mass index (BMI) are attributable to cardiovascular disease (CVD),” said Professor Emeline Van Craenenbroeck, Antwerp University in Belgium

Six people, including two children, have died with two others injured after their car plunged off a highway in Sarangani Province in the southern Philippines, police said Friday.

Police said the victim's silver sedan vehicle carrying eight people, including the driver, plunged into a cliff before 3 p.m. local time Thursday in Malungon town while traveling north, news agency reported.

Police said the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn, tumble down, and plunge into the cliff.

According to the initial investigation, the accident occurred when the victims were heading home to Davao Oriental Province after attending a family reunion in General Santos City.

Deadly road accidents are common in the Philippines, where drivers frequently flout the rules and vehicles are often poorly maintained or overloaded.

A public health warning has been issued after two people died of drug overdoses in Australia's capital city in 24 hours.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Policing on Friday issued a health alert after two fatal drug overdoses occurred in Canberra on Thursday, news agency reported.

Police said a woman died in Canberra's central business district on Thursday morning followed by a second death in the evening.

Authorities did not identify which drugs were involved in the deaths -- or whether the incidents were related to each other but urged drug users to be as safe as possible.

"If you use illicit drugs, or you know people who do, please spread the word," ACT Policing said in a statement posted on social media.

The ACT in October 2023 became the first Australian jurisdiction to decriminalize the possession of small quantities of illicit drugs, including heroin, methamphetamine and cocaine.

Teenager dies by suicide in Australian detention centre

A teenager died by suicide at a youth detention centre in Western Australia (WA), two days after being brought to the facility.

Roger Cook, the premier of WA, on Friday, confirmed that a 17-year-old Aboriginal boy was found unresponsive by staff in a cell at the Banksia Hill Youth Detention Centre in the southern suburbs of the state capital of Perth on Thursday night, news agency reported.

Paramedics were called to the facility at approximately 10 p.m. local time but were unable to revive the teenager, who had arrived at the centre two days earlier.

Cook described the teenager's death as distressing and a traumatic event.

"An internal investigation is now underway, and police are preparing a report for the coroner," he said at a press conference.

"A failure has occurred, but we'll continue to make sure we do everything we can to improve the lives of people, not only those who work at the facility but those who are at the facility," Cook said.

Dengue cases surge in Patna, 75 cases detected in five days

Dengue cases in Patna have been increasing for the past few days, with 15 to 20 patients being admitted to hospitals daily, said officials here.

The city marked the season's first dengue-related death on Thursday.

“Unfortunately, a critically ill dengue patient, Aryan Kumar of Patna City, who was admitted to NMCH, passed away on Thursday. This marks the first dengue-related death in Bihar this session,” Dr Subhash Chandra Prasad, the district infectious disease control officer said.

The number of dengue cases in Patna from January 1 to August 29 has reached 240.

According to an official, several localities in Patna, including Kankar Bagh, Patliputra Colony, Kumhrar, Agam Kuan, Kadam Kuan, Anisabad, Gardanibagh, Jakkanpur, and others, have become hotspots for dengue, reporting the highest numbers of patients.

Pakistan: 12 killed in landslide

Twelve people were killed when a landslide hit a house in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday morning, rescue teams said.

According to the statement released by the state-run rescue organisation, the accident happened in the Upper Dir district which has been experiencing heavy monsoon rains for the last few days, news agency reported.

The deceased, including three women, six kids and three men, were members of the same family who were sleeping inside the house when the calamity hit, the statement added.

All bodies were recovered from debris, and rescue work was still underway to clear the area from the rubbles of the landslide.

Parts of Pakistan are currently facing torrential rains, leading to flash floods, urban flooding and landslides in several districts.
