5 killed, 6 injured in road accident in Pakistan's Punjab

Five people were killed and six others injured in a road accident in Pakistan's east Punjab province on Tuesday, police said.

The incident happened at the motorway near the provincial capital city of Lahore where a passenger bus collided with a van, Syed Imran, a spokesperson for motorway police told news agency.

According to preliminary investigations, the bus driver fell asleep at the wheel, causing his vehicle to rear-end the van, he said as reported by news agency.

While the bus sustained minimal damage, all the casualties were from the van, he added.

The total gross enrollments under the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) have crossed 7 crore, with an enrolment of over 56 lakh in the current fiscal (FY25) to date, according to the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) on Tuesday.

APY is a guaranteed pension scheme by the government and regulated by PFRDA.

“The scheme is in its 10th year of rollout, and has achieved a big milestone,” said the authority.

Focused on unorganised sector workers, the pension scheme provides a guaranteed minimum pension of Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 per month based on contributions. The APY ensures a dignified life in old age for unorganised workers, addressing their financial insecurities and garnering their support.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Tuesday announced the killing of Suhail Hussein Husseini, commander of the Lebanese militant organisation Hezbollah headquarters.

According to a statement issued by the IDF, the Israeli Air Forces conducted a "precise, intelligence-based strike in the area of Beirut" that killed Husseini.

The headquarters oversees logistics within Hezbollah and is in charge of budgeting and management of the various units in the organisation, news agency reported.

Husseini played a crucial role in weapon transfers between Iran and Hezbollah and was responsible for distributing advanced weaponry among Hezbollah's units, overseeing both the transportation and allocation of these arms. He was also a member of the Jihad Council, Hezbollah's senior military leadership council, said the statement.

Ukraine, Slovakia agree to set up Eastern European energy hub

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico have agreed to establish an Eastern European energy hub, the media reported.

"It will strengthen the energy security of both our states and the entire European region," Shmyhal said on Monday after a meeting with Fico near Ukraine's western city of Uzhhorod.

He added that the energy hub aims to utilise Ukraine's gas storage facilities, develop the Mukachevo-Velke Kapusany electricity interconnector between the two countries, and enhance nuclear energy cooperation, news agency reported.

India’s domestic air passenger traffic reaches 132.3 lakh in Sep at 8.1 pc YoY growth

Domestic air passenger traffic reached nearly 132.3 lakh in the month of September, up by 0.8 per cent compared to 131.3 lakh in August, a report showed on Tuesday.

The domestic passenger traffic data witnessed a year-on-year growth of 8.1 per cent, compared to 122.5 lakh in September last year, as per data by credit rating agency ICRA.

For the first half of current fiscal (FY25), domestic air passenger traffic was 795.5 lakh, a YoY growth of 5.6 per cent and 12.9 per cent higher than the pre-Covid level of 704.4 lakh in H1 FY2020.

In the first five month of FY25, the international passenger traffic for Indian carriers stood at 135.9 lakh, with a YoY growth of 15.7 per cent and higher than the pre-Covid level of 92.2 lakh by 48.7 per cent.
