Japan hit by 50 cm tsunami following 5.9-magnitude earthquake

The Japanese weather agency said that a 50-centimetre tsunami struck an island south of Tokyo on Tuesday following a magnitude 5.9 earthquake, according to local media.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) had issued a tsunami advisory for the Izu and Ogasawara islands shortly after the tremor but lifted it by 11 a.m. (local time), stating that tsunami activity had sufficiently subsided, reports.

However, minor sea level fluctuations may persist for about half a day.

According to the weather agency, the earthquake, which struck at 8:14 a.m. (local time), had its epicentre near Torishima in the Izu island chain, located in the Pacific about 10 kilometres underground.

At 8:58 a.m. (local time), the 50-cm tsunami was recorded at Hachijo Island, approximately 180 kilometres north of the quake's epicentre. A smaller, 10-cm tsunami was detected at Miyake Island.

After the derailment, no disruption in railway services was reported.

US mulls ban on Chinese software in connected vehicles from 2027

US mulls ban on Chinese software in connected vehicles from 2027

The US Department of Commerce has proposed a rule to prohibit the import or sale of connected vehicles integrating certain software and hardware with a "nexus" to China or Russia, citing national security concerns.

The department's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) published a notice of the proposed rule amid concerns that those cars with cameras, sensors, software and other components -- manufactured in China -- could be used to glean sensitive data about drivers and passengers, as well as U.S. infrastructure.

The rule is expected to lead South Korean automakers to readjust their supply chains if they have used prohibited software and components from China. But the measure would make it difficult for their potential Chinese competitors to enter the U.S. market, observers said, reports news agency.

Meeting with PM Modi that Trump announced did not happen

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump had said that he was going to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit here but they did not meet.

PM Modi’s brief trip was of about 55 hours packed with activities, while Trump was in the heat of the campaign for an election six weeks away.

The PM was busy on Saturday with the Quad summit with President Joe Biden, and Prime Ministers Anthony Albanese of Australia and Fumio Kishida of Japan.

Monday was taken up entirely by PM Modi’s address to the Summit of the Future and meetings with some leaders before his flight back.

On Sunday, he addressed the diaspora rally in a New York suburb, and he had some time later in the day for meetings.
