New Zealand lawmaker proposes social media ban for under-16s

A New Zealand lawmaker is pushing for legislation that would ban children under 16 from accessing social media in a move that could see the country follow Australia's lead in tightening regulations on digital platforms.

New Zealand National Party MP Catherine Wedd has introduced a member's bill that would require social media companies to verify users' ages and block minors from creating accounts, according to news agency.

Platforms could face financial penalties for non-compliance and would be obligated to take "all reasonable steps" to ensure users are at least 16 years old, Radio New Zealand (RNZ) reported on Tuesday.

"My Social Media Age-Appropriate Users Bill is about protecting young people from bullying, inappropriate content and social media addiction by restricting access for under 16-year-olds," RNZ quoted Wedd as saying.

Study finds everyday habits boost mental well-being

Study finds everyday habits boost mental well-being

Simple, everyday behaviours like chatting with friends, spending time in nature, and mentally engaging activities can significantly improve mental health, according to research.

The study, which surveyed over 600 adults in Western Australia, found that people who engaged in daily conversations with others scored 10 points higher on a standard mental well-being scale than those who rarely did, news agency reported.

Daily exposure to nature was linked to a five-point increase, while regular social catchups, physical activity, spiritual practice, and helping others also contributed to improved mental well-being, according to Australia's Curtin University researchers.

The findings, published in the British journal of SSM-Mental Health, highlight the power of accessible, low-cost actions in maintaining mental wellness, said the study's lead researcher, Prof. Christina Pollard from Curtin's School of Population Health.

Won’t tolerate harassment of people through rail and road blockade, be prepared for stern action: CM

Strongly condemning the organizations announcing road and rail blockades in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann stated that legal action will be taken against those who disrupt public life and hinder the state’s progress.

In a statement issued today, the Chief Minister said that there are many other ways to express dissent, blocking transportation routes and hampering the development of the state cannot be tolerated. He added that such protests particularly harm the people of Punjab, especially hardworking individuals who earn their livelihood through daily labor. Road blockages often delay emergency medical services, and during the ongoing wheat procurement season, uninterrupted rail services are essential for the transportation of crops. Therefore, halting transport services severely impacts the interests of the state.

Molecular profiling key to reduce radiation for women with endometrial cancer: Study

Molecular profiling can safely reduce radiotherapy for women with early-stage endometrial cancer while identifying those who would benefit from more intensive treatment, according to a study that marks a significant step forward in personalised cancer treatment.

Endometrial cancer is a type of gynaecological cancer, most often affecting women after menopause.

For women with high-intermediate-risk disease, adjuvant radiotherapy -- particularly vaginal brachytherapy (a form of internal radiotherapy delivered directly to the vaginal area) -- is commonly used after surgery to reduce the risk of recurrence.

However, patients don't need it equally, and some may receive more treatment than necessary, exposing them to potential side effects without added benefit.

The study showed that molecular profiling -- a method that examines the genetic and biological features of a tumour can guide clinical decisions. It helps identify which patients are most likely to benefit from radiotherapy, and which can safely avoid it.

Govt moving ahead with IDBI Bank disinvestment plan in current fiscal

The government’s disinvestment plan for IDBI Bank, as part of the broader strategy to monetise assets through stake sales during the current financial year, is progressing in accordance with the normal schedule, the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management Secretary Arunish Chawla has said.

"The focus remains on steady execution and long-term value creation, even as global economic conditions remain uncertain," Chawla told in an exclusive interview.

The Centre and the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) plan to jointly offload a 60.72 per cent stake in IDBI Bank, which comprises 30.48 per cent held by the government and a 30.24 per cent share by the insurance giant.

Chawla said that the government aims to meet regulatory norms through structured divestments in public sector banks and central public sector enterprises.

He also said efforts to monetise land and infrastructure assets of MTNL were continuing and confirmed that a flexible approach was being adopted to meet minimum public shareholding targets.
