RG Kar protests: Junior doctors agree to meet CM, seek nod for one of three conditions

The West Bengal Junior Doctors' Forum (WBJDF) expressed its willingness to attend the scheduled meeting at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence on Monday on their demands in the wake of the ghastly rape and murder of a junior doctor of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, but sought that one of their three conditions be agreed to by the government.

In the reply to Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, the WBJDF argued that since the last scheduled meeting at the same venue on Saturday, which failed to fructify over their demands for recording the process, former R.G. Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh and the former SHO of Tala Police station Abhijit Mondal have been arrested by the CBI in the rape and murder case, the developments increase the significance of transparency of the meeting even more than before.

However, Justice Surya Kant, heading a two-judge bench, dismissed his distinct plea challenging the legality of arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the alleged liquor scam and the subsequent remand.

Justice Kant held that there exists “no merit” in the contention that the CBI failed to adhere to the procedural law governing arrest and that Kejriwal's arrest did not suffer from any procedural infirmities.

Crucial meeting of CPI-M to pick new general secretary

Crucial meeting of CPI-M to pick new general secretary

For the CPI-M, Friday is crucial as the party will elect its new general secretary after the demise of Sitaram Yechury.

It is the first time since the party's inception in 1964 that a general secretary has passed away while in office. The role of the general secretary is crucial as the 24th Party Congress, to be held in April next year, will elect a new set of office-bearers

Hence, the politburo will have to zero down on its immediate successor to Yechury.

Though Yechury’s predecessor Prakash Karat is a Keralite, it was the legendary EMS Nampoothiripad who was elected in 1978 as the general secretary, a post that he held till 1992, was regarded as the ‘Keralite’ to have held the topmost post for long.
