Cold wave conditions in five Bengal districts, says MeT office

The Regional Meteorological Office in Kolkata has predicted cold wave conditions in five districts of West Bengal for the next two days.

These five districts are East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Bankura, Purulia and Birbhum. Cold wave is a situation when either temperature after sunset scales down below 10 degrees Celsius or minimum temperature is below the normal levels by 5 degrees Celsius.

At the same time, dense fog has been predicted in the next few days in the five districts in the northern sector of West Bengal namely Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and North Dinajpur. Fog has also been predicted in certain districts in South Bengal -- Purulia, Bankura and West Burdwan -- in the early morning hours.

Even the state capital Kolkata has started to feel the pinch of cold wind since Thursday. The maximum temperature in Kolkata on Thursday was 24.3 degrees Celsius, which was 2.7 degrees lower than the normal level.

Six schools in Delhi received a bomb threat on Friday via email. The police were following the usual standard operating procedure (SOP) of undertaking detailed checks, said officials.

The schools are Bhatnagar Public School, Paschim Vihar; Cambridge School, Sriniwaspuri; DPS, East of Kailash; South Delhi Public School, Defence Colony; Delhi Police Public School, Safdarjung Enclave; and Venkatesh Public School, Rohini. The threats triggered panic among parents and authorities.

Delhi Police statement in a statement said, "We are following the usual SOP of undertaking detailed checks wherever such mails are received."

Fire department officials and police teams rushed to the locations after the first alert was received at 4.30 a.m. After thorough inspections, officials reported that no suspicious items had been found at any of the schools.

In a significant operation conducted jointly by the East Champaran Police and the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), five individuals were arrested on Thursday for carrying highly refined heroin and a chemical in Bihar’s East Champaran district.

The raid took place in a village under Chhatauni police station, where two kilograms of a contraband substance and a chemical used in the refining of brown sugar production were seized. The international market value of the seized items is estimated to be ₹7 crore.

Six persons were arrested on Thursday in J&K’s Jammu city for firing, with a country-made pistol, at a man with the intention of killing him.

“The incident took place on Tuesday when the accused shot at him and later threw him from a height of nearly 60 feet near Ring Road Kunjwani on the outskirts of the city,” a police official said.

He said that the victim was taken to hospital by locals, adding that a case has been registered under relevant sections of law at Bishnah police station and a team formed to nab the accused.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested an accused from Assam’s Goalpara district and detained two others over suspected links with Pakistan-based terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Muhammed (JeM).

In collaboration with the Assam Police Special Task Force (STF), the NIA carried out raids throughout Goalpara and questioned a number of people.

Sources said that the NIA arrested one imam, Sahanur Alom, from a mosque during a raid in Goalpara's Tukura area.

In a tragic accident, four schoolgirls, studying in Class 8, were killed after a speeding lorry laden with cement bags overturned onto them on Thursday in Kalladikode on the Kozhikode-Palakkad National Highway.

The four girls were walking on the pavement on their way back home when they got trapped under the lorry at around 4.15 p.m.

The deceased were identified as Irfana, Midha, Reedha and Ayisha.

One student was fortunate to have escaped unhurt as she managed to move out quickly, while the other four got trapped under the lorry.

Komalakumari, a member of the local Panchayat, said the accident took place at Kalladikode near the Karimbu Higher Secondary School, where the four girls studied.

In a tragic road incident, three people from Kerala, including a two-month-old toddler, lost their lives on Thursday when the Alto car they were travelling in collided with a truck at Madhukarai in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu.

The deceased have been identified as Jacob Abraham (60), his wife Sheeba (55) and their grandson Aaron (2 months) all hailing from Eraviperur in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala.

Aleena (21), daughter of Jacob and Sheeba and mother of Aaron is admitted to hospital in a critical condition.

A Pakistani intruder was arrested near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, officials said on Thursday.

The officials said the intruder from the Pakistan side was apprehended by the Army near the LoC on Wednesday.

The intruder was identified as 18-year-old Mohd Sadiq.

"He was trying to sneak into the Indian side of the LoC when he was caught in Noorkote village near the border fence in Poonch," said the officials.

“He was not carrying any weapon or incriminating material. He is being questioned about his motive to cross the LoC. It appears he might have crossed the LoC inadvertently,” the officials said.

Five-year-old Aryan, who fell into a 150-foot-deep borewell in Kalikhad village, Dausa district, Rajasthan, on December 9, succumbed despite a 56-hour-long rescue operation.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local authorities worked tirelessly to save him, but he could not survive, the medical officials announced late on Wednesday night.

Aryan fell into the borewell around 3 p.m. on Saturday, just 100 feet from his house and in front of his mother. Rescue teams arrived swiftly and initiated efforts to save him. However, after being pulled out late Wednesday night, Aryan was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

7 injured as speeding car hits two vehicles of Rajasthan CM's convoy

An accident involving the convoy of Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma occurred at the Akshaya Patra crossing in Jagatpura, Jaipur, which left seven people, including five police officers injured.

The incident took place when a car travelling on the opposite side collided with two vehicles in the Chief Minister's convoy.

The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) officials told IANS that the rashly driven car coming from the opposite side collided into a Bolero which was part of the Chief Minister's convoy.

It slightly hit another vehicle too, they added.
