Canadian Pendrith leads at weather-hit Shriners Open

Canadian Taylor Pendrith who had a 10-under 61 on the first day only had to play six holes and stayed in the lead before the second round was halted by darkness at the Shriners Children's Open. He escaped the strong winds that hit during the day and caused a four-hour delay and battered the field.

Pendrith now faces a long third day — 12 holes to complete the second round and however many holes in the third round as the autumn light allows.

He remained at 10-under — four pars, a birdie and a bogey in his short day of work — and led by one shot over Filipino Rico Hoey, who made a 15-foot eagle putt on his seventh and final hole.

Las Vegas resident Kurt Kitayama, who had 66 on first day, was bogey-free for a 68 in the second despite gusts approaching 40 mph and low temperatures that led to players wearing sweaters and ski caps.

Lyon motivated to 'promote' spin bowling after Warne's death

Lyon motivated to 'promote' spin bowling after Warne's death

Australia spinner Nathan Lyon feels that he has the responsibility to 'promote' spin bowling in the country, the heritage that was revived by legend Shane Warne in the Down Under.

The 36-year-old is determined to keep going, aiming to continue playing until close to his 40th birthday and potentially featuring in the 2027 Ashes series in England. Lyon mentioned that he hasn’t given much thought to the legacy he'll leave for future spinners or who might succeed him in the Test team when his career eventually concludes.

After Warne's sudden death in 2022, Lyon believes that he has to keep the art alive in the country. He is the third-highest wicket-taker for Australia in Tests, with a tally of 530 scalps in 129 matches. Lyon is 33 dismissals short of Glenn McGrath to take the second spot behind Warne's massive tally of 708 wickets.

Women’s T20 WC: West Indies coach Deitz praises players for putting their bodies and passion on the line

Women’s T20 WC: West Indies coach Deitz praises players for putting their bodies and passion on the line

Though West Indies’ ambitions of reaching the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup final ended with an eight-run defeat to New Zealand at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, head coach Shane Deitz praised his players for putting their bodies and passion on the line.

West Indies began their competition with a ten-wicket hammering at the hands of South Africa, before coming back roaring to top Group B with a dominant chase against England. They also dealt with injuries to Zaida James, Deandra Dottin and Stafanie Taylor while punching above their weight to enter the semi-finals.

"It's been pretty emotional last few days I guess for a great win over England emotions are high we tried to get back to a level for our emotions and be ready to play again, which I think we did. But I think the girls are so passionate about playing cricket for the West Indies. And they put their body on the line and their passion on the line all the time. So, they're going to have some emotions," said Deitz after the match ended.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced late Friday that the Group B match between South Korea and Palestine on November 19, part of the third round in the AFC qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, will take place at Amman International Stadium in Amman, News Agency reported.

The South Koreans defeated Jordan 2-0 at the same stadium on October 10.

Verstappen pips Russell to Sprint Qualifying pole in Austin by 0.012s

Max Verstappen clinched pole position for the Sprint at the United States Grand Prix, the Dutchman having beaten Mercedes’ George Russell in Sprint Qualifying by just 0.012s.

After Russell set the benchmark by going out early on track in SQ3, the likes of Lando Norris and the Ferrari pair of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz – who had been looking strong earlier on Friday – tried to better this. All were unable to do so, but Verstappen left it late to put his Red Bull into P1.

Russell will join Verstappen on the front row, with Leclerc and Norris behind in third and fourth ahead of Sainz and the Haas of Nico Hulkenberg in fifth and sixth places.

Lewis Hamilton lines up in seventh for Mercedes, alongside Haas’s Kevin Magnussen in a solid eighth, while RB’s Yuki Tsunoda and the Williams of Franco Colapinto round out the top 10.

It’s a lovely wicket to bat, says Rachin Ravindra after scoring ton

New Zealand batter Rachin Ravindra asserted that the wicket at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium is "lovely to bat" after scoring a century against India in the first Test on Friday.

Contrary to India's first innings which wrapped on 46, their lowest total at home, Rachin (134), Devon Conway (91) and Tim Southee (65) guided New Zealand to a hefty lead of 356 runs after posting 402 in their first innings.

Rachin and Southee added 137 runs for the eighth wicket, the joint-highest eighth wicket partnership for New Zealand in Tests against India. Playing on his home ground, Rachin was feeling comfortable to know the surroundings with his father cheering him from the stands.

Paarl Royals have appointed Trevor Penney as the new head coach for the SA20 2025 season, which is set to take place from January 9 to February 8, 2025.

Penney will assume the position previously held by New Zealand's Shane Bond, who will shift his attention to preparing for the IPL mega auction with the Rajasthan Royals.

"The strategic change will enable Bond to spend more time in India over the next few months as the team's bowling coach, working extensively with recently appointed head coach Rahul Dravid. Penney’s appointment comes on the back of his success as head coach of the Barbados Royals’ men’s team in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), where he has overseen a period of consistent high performance," the franchise said in a statement.

1st Test: Kohli, Sarfaraz hit counter-attacking fifties as India end day three at 231/3

1st Test: Kohli, Sarfaraz hit counter-attacking fifties as India end day three at 231/3

Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan smashed counter-attacking fifties before the former got out on last ball of day three as India reached 231/3 in 49 overs at stumps and trail New Zealand by 125 runs in the first Test at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

After Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal added 72 runs for the first wicket, Sarfaraz came out all guns blazing to be unbeaten on 70 off 78 balls – laced with seven fours and three sixes. Kohli was at his usual best – driving, lofting and sweeping with ease - and became the fourth India to reach the 9000 Test run milestone during the course of his 70 off 102 balls.

But him being taken out by Glenn Phillips just before the day’s play ended capped off a sensational day of Test cricket which began with Rachin Ravindra’s excellent 134 giving New Zealand a 356-run first-innings lead.

The final session began with three boundaries, before the 72-run opening ended when Jaiswal stepped out against Ajaz Patel, got beaten and was easily stumped. Rohit then hit a hat-trick of flurry boundaries off Matt Henry – last of which got him his 18th Test fifty. But in the next over, Rohit defended on the front foot off Patel, but the ball bounced off the inner half of the bat and rolled onto the stumps.

Virat Kohli becomes fourth Indian to reach 9000 Test runs milestone

India batter Virat Kohli has added another feather to his highly illustrious cap as he completed 9,000 Test runs in the ongoing match against New Zealand at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. He reached the milestone during India's second innings.

Kohli became the fourth Indian batter to reach the feat after Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Rahul Dravid (13,265) and Sunil Gavaskar (10,122). Among them, Kohli is the slowest to reach the milestone in terms of innings taken (197).

The 35-year-old batter, who has not hit a Test fifty in 2024, smashed his 31st Test half-century as India were put under pressure by New Zealand after posting 402 in the first innings.
