(Ravinder Singh Dhindsa)
Desh Bhagat University (DBU) hosted an insightful expert talk on the critical issue of space debris by Mr. Rajinder Kumar Verma, a renowned space scientist and expert in aerospace engineering. The event attracted students, faculty members, and space enthusiasts alike, offering a deep dive into the growing problem of space debris and its implications for future space exploration and satellite communication.Verma, who has years of experience working with major space agencies, opened the session by explaining the phenomenon of space debris-non-functional satellites, spent rocket stages, and fragments from collisions or disintegration orbiting the Earth. He emphasized how the increasing volume of debris in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) poses significant risks to operational satellites and manned space missions, potentially leading to catastrophic collisions. The interactive session that followed saw students and faculty engaging with Verma on various questions, including the role of governments and private space agencies in tackling space debris and the ethical concerns surrounding space pollution.Speaking on the occasion Dr. Zora Singh, Chancellor of Desh Bhagat University, expressed his gratitude to Mr. Verma, stating, "This enlightening session has opened our eyes to the urgent need for addressing space debris. Mr. Verma’s expertise will surely inspire our students to contribute meaningfully to the aerospace industry." Pro Chancellor Dr. Tejinder Kaur of Desh Bhagat University (DBU) added her valuable insights on the global issue, further enriching the session. During the expert talk Dr. Harsh Sadawarti,Vice President DBU actively participated in the discussion on space debris, engaging directly with space expert Mr. Rajinder Kumar Verma. Dr. Harsh Sadawarti said that the university plans to hold similar events in the future to encourage student involvement in cutting-edge research and global issues like space sustainability.
