Punjab Police arrested 153 drug traffickers and seized property valued at Rs 208 crore, linked to heroin seizures of over 2 kg each in 2024, a senior police official said.
"Punjab Police has intensified its anti-drug efforts with a twin approach of focused crackdown on big fish and massive campaign against trafficking at points of sale. In 2024, 153 major traffickers linked to big seizures of over 2 Kg heroin each have been arrested, and properties worth Rs 208 crore seized," DGP Punjab Police said on X.
At the grassroots level, Punjab Police is rigorously targeting drug sellers in villages and urban areas, leading to 7,686 NDPS-related FIRs and 10,524 arrests this year, DGP Punjab Police added.
"Total seizures in 2024 include 790 Kg Heroin, 860 Kg Opium, and 36,711 Kg Poppy husk. Additionally, networks involved in pharmaceutical drug abuse, particularly those with links to Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Gujarat, are under close scrutiny to dismantle supply chains fueling the drug trade in Punjab," DGP Punjab Police stated.
On October 25, Punjab Police Anti-Narcotics Task Force along with Gurdaspur police made preventive detention under the PITS-NDPS Act of top smuggler Avtar Singh alias Tari from the border district of Punjab's Gurdaspur, said officials.
Tari has been detained under the PIT-NDPS Act for two years and sent to Central Jail Bathinda, said officials.
