Awareness Programme on Ending Iodine Deficiency through Public Awareness and Global Action at Guru Granth Sahib World University

Department of Biotechnology in collaboration with Women Grievance Redressal Cell of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University, Fatehgarh Sahib organised awareness programme on the theme “Ending Iodine Deficiency through Public Awareness and Global Action”. The theme for World Iodine Deficiency Day 2024 focuses on educating communities about the importance of Iodine and advocating for policies that promote the use of iodized salt to prevent Iodine Deficiency Disorders, particularly among women and young children. The event featured a student seminar through power point presentation on the critical role iodine plays in thyroid function, growth, and development. The recommended daily iodine consumption, disorders arising due to iodine deficiency and measures to prevent iodine deficiency were also discussed. Dr. Rupinder Kaur, Head of Biotechnology Department and Convener of Women Grievance Redressal Cell of the University emphasized the importance of awareness programs based on the iodine supplementation, fortification and dietary diversification in preventing iodine deficiency disorders and promoting global wealth and well-being. World Iodine Deficiency Day serves as a reminder of the progress made in preventing iodine deficiency disorders through national initiatives like NIDDCP and global efforts spearheaded by WHO and UNICEF. Prof. (Dr.) PritPal Singh, Vice Chancellor of the University highlighted that such awareness programs should be regularly conducted by the Institutes. Prof. (Dr.) Sukhwinder Singh Billing, Dean Academic Affairs congratulated the Department for successful organization of the event.
