Woman burnt to death on suspicion of practising black magic in Telangana

In a horrific incident, a woman was burnt to death by unidentified persons on suspicion of practising black magic in Telangana's Medak district.

According to police, the woman was beaten up and set ablaze at her residence in Katrial village of Ramayampet Mandal late on Thursday night.

The assailants poured petrol on the woman, identified as D. Muttava, and set her afire. Her son and daughter-in-law ran out of the house in panic. Hearing the cries, neighbours rushed to the house and doused the fire. She succumbed while being shifted to a hospital in Hyderabad.

Police shifted the body to Ramayampet Hospital and took up investigations.

South Korea reports cancer, heart disease as major causes of death in 2023

Cancer, heart disease, and pneumonia were among the key causes of death for South Koreans in 2023, according to a report on Friday.

According to data from Statistics Korea, suicide remained the top factor among those in their 30s and younger, news agency reported.

The total number of deaths reported in the country came to 352,511 in 2023, 5.5 per cent down from a year earlier.

The agency added 689.2 deaths were reported per 100,000 South Koreans last year, also down 38.3 per cent from a year earlier.

Samsung Electronics said on Friday that it has begun mass production of its latest industry-leading solid-state drive (SSD) product, optimal for usage in powerful artificial intelligence personal computers.

Samsung said the PM9E1 SSD, which boasts the industry's highest performance and largest capacity, is built on its in-house 5-nanometer-based controller and eighth-generation V-NAND technology.

According to the company, the PM9E1 will provide powerful performance and enhanced power efficiency, making it an optimal solution for on-device AI PCs. Key attributes have all been improved compared with its predecessor, reports news agency.

Death toll rises to 87 after ferry sinks in Congo

At least 87 people have been reportedly killed after a ferry sank on Lake Kivu in the eastern Congo.

The ferry, coming from the town of Minova in the South Kivu province, capsized on Thursday near the port of Kituku, on the outskirts of Goma, the capital of the North Kivu province.

In a report addressed to the Central government in Kinshasa, the provincial government also spoke of 78 people still missing. The 87 bodies recovered were transported to the morgue of the general hospital in Goma and nine other survivors were taken to hospital, news agency reported.

The number of passengers aboard the boat remains unknown.

Mount Merapi in Indonesia emits 21 lava flows toward southwest

Indonesia's most active volcano, Mount Merapi, emitted 21 lava flows towards southwest Thursday, according to the Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Centre.

"The lava flows are moving toward Kali Bebeng, reaching up to 1,500 meters," said Agus Budi Santoso, head of the centre.

The centre urges people to avoid activities in danger zones that may be affected by lava flows and hot clouds.

Rwanda has recorded seven new cases of Marburg virus disease and one more death, according to the latest figures released by the Rwandan Health Ministry.

The total number of Marburg virus infections since the outbreak now stands at 36, with 11 deaths reported so far. At least 25 people are in isolation and receiving treatment, the ministry said.

Health authorities said last week that up to 300 individuals were being monitored closely after they were tracked as contacts of the confirmed Marburg virus cases since the virus broke out in the country.

The government banned visits to hospitalized patients and suspended monthly visits to students in boarding schools as part of the measures to reduce the risk of transmission,news agency reported.

The health ministry has advised anyone experiencing symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, vomiting, muscle pain, or stomach aches to visit their nearest health facilities.

A member of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) died on Thursday from injuries sustained in a recent Israeli strike in the Syrian capital Damascus, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

The IRGC serviceman, identified as Majid Divani, served as a military advisor in Syria, and sustained injuries in Israeli airstrikes on Damascus early Tuesday, the report said.

Early Tuesday, Israeli warplanes and drones raided several sites in the Syrian capital, killing three and injuring nine others in densely populated residential areas.

Culvert collapses in Bihar’s Bhagalpur

A culvert in Bihar's Bhagalpur district collapsed on Thursday due to heavy rainfall and the rising water pressure of the Ganga River.

The culvert, located in Mustafapur Chaukhandi village within the Pirpainti block, was swept away by the strong currents of the river.

Following the incident, officials from the Water Resource Department, disaster management teams, and local police promptly arrived at the scene to assess the situation.

Nagendra Nath Gupta, the District Public Relation Officer (DPRO) of Bhagalpur, said that the Mustafapur Chaukhandi culvert, located on the Pirpainti-Bakharpur main road, was washed due to heavy rains.
