Heavy rains in Tirupati hit flight operations

Heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati affected flight operations at Renigunta Airport and triggered landslides on the hill road to Tirumala temple on Wednesday.

Due to water stagnation on the runway, a couple of flights coming from Hyderabad were diverted to Chennai.

The road leading to the airport was also inundated due to the continued downpour.

Heavy rains lashing the temple town since Tuesday have inundated low-lying areas and disrupted normal life. Meanwhile, landslides on the Ghat road have affected the vehicular movement to Sri Venkateswara temple atop Tirumala hill.

Heavy rain inundated several localities in Bengaluru on Wednesday after which authorities pressed two tractors into service to ferry affected residents from one point to another.

The weather office has forecast incessant rains throughout the day and on Thursday.

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has arranged two tractors at the Kendriya Vihar apartments to help residents of the Yelahanka locality.

A help desk was set up on Tuesday evening, and arrangements have been made to provide essential supplies like drinking water, milk, bread, and biscuits.

Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath visited the inundated localities and apartment complexes in the morning and monitored the steps taken to mitigate the problem.

A senior citizen couple and another person died in a major fire that broke out in a flat in the upmarket Lokhandwala Complex in Andheri West, officials said here on Wednesday.

According to the BMC Disaster Control, the blaze was reported around 8 a.m. and firefighters and other rescue teams rushed to the spot.

A 10th-floor flat in the 14-storeyed building, Riya Palace at CR No.4 in Lokhandwala was in flames with dark clouds of smoke emanating from there.

However, the conflagration was confined to the flat itself, though many panicked neighbours from the same floor and upper floors ran off their homes to wait in the society garden.

The fast-unto-death demonstration by a group of junior doctors at Esplanade in central Kolkata in the aftermath of the rape and murder of a junior doctor of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, entered the 12th day on Wednesday.

The total number of junior doctors on hunger strike at the dais at Esplanade now stands at seven, with Rumelika Kumar from All India Institute of Hygiene & Public Health and Spandan Chowdhury from Midnapore Medical College & Hospital joining the other hunger-strikers from Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, with the Durga Puja getting over, Kolkata Police, hell-bent on controlling the continuing protest on the tragedy, have extended prohibitory orders around the R.G. Kar complex in North Kolkata till October 30 against assembly of five or more people in that entire area.

Section 163 of the newly enacted Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita has been imposed in the entire area covering Shyambazar five-point crossing, Tala, Shyampukur and Ultadanga, among others.

Heavy rain continued in Chennai and surrounding districts in Tamil Nadu for the second consecutive day, marking the arrival of the northeast monsoon.

Residential areas in Anna Nagar West, Kolathur, Pammal, Perambur, and other parts of the state capital are submerged under knee-deep water.

Traffic congestion was reported in many parts of Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur districts.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) stated on Wednesday: “It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross the north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai, during the early morning of October 17 as a depression.”

Notching a breakthrough, the Mumbai Police have detained three more persons in connection with the sensational killing of ex-Minister and Nationalist Congress Party leader Baba Ziauddin Siddique, officials said here on Tuesday.

They are: Harishkumar Balakram, hailing Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh, besides Gullu and Monu, and all have been caught in Pune.

Balakram, 23, who works as a scrap dealer was part of the conspiracy to kill Siddique and had reportedly money and other logistics support to carry out the hit on the night of October 12.

Violent protest occurred in Bihar's Sitamarhi district on Tuesday after two persons, stabbed during the immersion of Goddess Durga's idol, succumbed.

Angry people of Dheng village, under the jurisdiction of the Suppi police station in the district, took to the streets, blocked the road and burnt tyres.

They demanded justice and the immediate arrest of those responsible for the violence.

As the violent protest erupted in the village, the district police deployed additional forces in the region.

The authorities are investigating the incident to prevent further escalation and maintain peace.

Bihar deploys drones to monitor illegal sand mining

The Bihar government has deployed drones to curb illegal mining in the state, Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha said on Tuesday.

He emphasised the government's commitment to eliminate illegal mining.

"We have appealed to the citizens to report any incidents of illegal sand mining. We will also reward them as an incentive for providing valuable information. The department will ensure the confidentiality of informants and, in recognition of their contributions, will honour them," he said.

In his directive, the deputy chief minister urged officials to remain vigilant and ensure that no illegal mining activities occur in the state.

The Bihar government has designated 984 sand ghats - 581 yellow sand ghats and 403 white sand ghats - for mining activities.

Heavy rain was lashing several areas of Chennai, with the city recording an average of 6.9 cm in the last 24 hours.

The rainfall volume was recorded from 8.30 a.m. on Monday to 8 a.m. Tuesday. The Regional Meteorological Centre reported that Ennore, in North Chennai, recorded the maximum rainfall, followed by Manali, Kolathur, and other areas.

Ennore received 10 cm of rain, while Manali and Kolathur reported 9 cm. The Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC) of the Greater Chennai Corporation stated that in one hour, from 7.00 a.m. to 8.00 a.m., the Ayyapakkam area recorded 3.3 cm of rain, followed by Mugavilakkam in the Alandur zone with 3.09 cm.

The heavy rainfall has resulted in waterlogging in several areas, including Kolathur, Vyasarpadi, Pulianthope, and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR).

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning, predicting heavy rain in the capital city for the next three days. A yellow alert for heavy rainfall was also issued for 13 districts in the state.

Heavy rain was forecasted for Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Mandya, Mysuru, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagar, Hassan, Chamarajanagar, and Kodagu, all located in the southern part of the state.
