Five killed in head-on collision between two vehicles in Rajasthan's Churu

A major road accident claimed five lives early Wednesday morning when a canter and an SUV collided head-on on the Churu-Hanumangarh highway in Rajasthan's Churu district.

Two others were seriously injured in the collision, officials reported.

According to SHO Arvind Kumar, the accident occurred when a Tata Safari travelling from Sardarshahar to Hanumangarh collided with a canter coming from the opposite direction. The impact severely damaged the Safari, trapping its occupants.

Upon receiving the information, Sardarshahar police, along with local residents worked to rescue the victims. A crane was also used to entangle the vehicles. The injured were rushed to the hospital in a police vehicle, while a two-hour effort was required to extricate two individuals trapped in the wreckage.

The police on Tuesday arrested two female terror associates under the Public Safety Act (PSA) in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district.

The two women have been identified as Maryama Begum, wife of Mohd Shafeeq of Loudhara, Basantgarh; and Arshada Begum, wife of late Jamal Din of Rai Chak in Basantgarh, said the officials here.

“They were assessed to be posing a significant threat to the safety and security of the state. They were found to be involved in providing logistic support to terrorists and working as their guides/facilitators for terrorist organisations. Their continuous actions posed a serious risk to public safety and tranquillity. To prevent further criminal activities detrimental to the security of the state and keeping in view their activities both were ordered to be detained under the PSA,” officials said earlier.

Teary farewell for 5 Kerala medical students killed in high-speed collision

Kerala woke up on Tuesday morning to the sad news of the death of five first-year MBBS students at the state-run Alappuzha Medical College Hospital, in a horrific accident on Monday night.

The five medical students died after their car, that was being driven at high speed, collided with a Kerala State Road Transportation Corporation (KSRTC) passenger bus.

The incident occurred near Alappuzha around 9.20 P.M. when the Tavera MUV that the students were travelling in reportedly skidded and hit the KSRTC bus traveling from Guruvayur to Kayamkulam.

On Tuesday morning, the post mortem of the five students was conducted and their bodies were kept at their college, where they had been studying since October this year.

A former village defence guard (VDG) was found dead on Tuesday under mysterious circumstances in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district.

Officials said the body of 45-year-old Ashok Kumar, a native of Chapper village in Udhampur, was found in the forest area.

“He had been previously disengaged as a VDG. His body was found with a point 303 rifle by his side. The body has been taken into possession by police for the completion of medico-legal formalities after a case was registered in this incident,” the officials said.

The village defence guards are provided with weapons by the police after giving them basic training in handling weapons. These guards protect their families and villages against the terrorists in remote inaccessible areas of the Jammu division.

Over 25 injured as bus overturns in MP's Chhindwara

Over 25 people were injured when a bus carrying them overturned in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara on Tuesday morning.

More than 25 pilgrims, including women, were injured and rushed to a government hospital for treatment, police said.

The accident occurred when pilgrims were returning from a week-long tour to Kashi Vishwanath, Ayodhya, Mathura and Vrindavan.

People started the pilgrimage on November 27 from Chhindwara and were scheduled to return to their homes on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in front of Kendriya Vidyalaya in the Chorai area between 8 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. All the passengers were from Chhindwara. Most of the pilgrims were travelling with their families.

The incident occurred when the bus driver lost control of the vehicle after averting a collision with a truck coming from the opposite direction. Though the collision was averted, the bus overturned and rolled into a field.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a yellow alert for 15 districts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, predicting heavy rain of up to 11 cm in interior and Western Ghat districts, including the Nilgiris, Krishnagiri, Tiruppur, Erode, Theni, and Madurai.

Cyclone Fengal, moving slowly westward, has brought heavy rain to many parts of Tamil Nadu. Uthangarai in Krishnagiri district recorded 50 cm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Monday.

Over the weekend, heavy rainfall battered several areas, including Kedar (42 cm), Soorapattu (38 cm), Mundiyampakkam (32 cm), Villupuram town (35 cm), and Koliyanur (32 cm) in Villupuram district; Harur (33 cm) in Dharmapuri district; and Thirupalapandal (32 cm) and Madampoondi (31 cm) in Kallakurichi district.

The RMC stated that the weather system, now a well-marked low-pressure area over north-interior Tamil Nadu, was expected to weaken further and move into the Arabian Sea on Tuesday (December 3, 2024).

One terrorist killed in ongoing gunfight in J&K’s Srinagar

One terrorist was killed on Tuesday in an ongoing gunfight with the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar district.

Officials said that one terrorist has been killed so far in the ongoing anti-terrorist operation by the security forces in the upper reaches of the Harwan mountain belt of the Srinagar district.

“The operation is still going on in the area,” the officials said.

Firing exchanges had taken place late Monday evening between the security forces and terrorists in the upper mountain belt.

“These firing exchanges started during a CASO (Cordon & Search Operation) launched by the security forces after specific input about the presence of terrorists in the area.

“One terrorist has been killed in this operation so far. The cordon around the area where terrorists are believed to be hiding has been tightened. The operation was resumed with the first light on Tuesday morning,” the officials said.

The national capital continued to suffer from toxic air, with the average Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi recorded as 'poor' on Tuesday.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the average AQI of Delhi-NCR was at 274 points till 7:30 a.m.

In eight areas of the city, the AQI level remained between 300 and above 400 -- 305 in Bawana, 307 in Jahangirpuri, 325 in Mundka, 304 in Nehru Nagar, 303 in RK Puram, 302 in Rohini, 342 in Shadipur, 306 in Siri Fort.

While in other and most areas of Delhi, the AQI level remained between 200 and above 300 -- Alipur (272), Anand Vihar (293), Ashok Vihar (285), Chandni Chowk (249), Mathura Road (235), Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range (293), DTU (265), Dwarka Sector 8 (299), IGI Airport (257), Dilshad Garden (262), ITO (235), Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (250), Lodhi Road (232), Major Dhyanchand Stadium (271), Mandir Marg (262), Najafgarh (237), Narela (260), North Campus DU (261), NSIT Dwarka (252), Okhla Phase 2 (278), Patparganj (271), Punjabi Bagh (252), Pusa (248), Sonia Vihar (289) and Sri Aurobindo Marg (238).

Five killed, 20 injured as bus falls into river near Bengal-Sikkim border

At least, five persons were reportedly killed and several others were injured after a tourist bus lost its balance and fell into the Teesta River near the West Bengal-Sikkim border at Rangpo on the Sikkim side.

The bus was travelling from West Bengal’s Siliguri to Sikkim's capital Gangtok

State police sources said that till now bodies of five tourists have been detected and some others have been admitted to a local hospital under critical condition.

The administrative officials apprehend the death toll might increase later. The deceased five persons are yet to be identified.

Four illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators were arrested from Mazdia under Krishnaganj Police Station in Nadia district in West Bengal on Saturday.

The four illegal immigrants arrested have been identified as Sumi Akhtar, Iman Biswas, Shankar Biswas and Rupkumar Biswas.

Sources from the state police said that although the accused were residents of four different locations in Bangladesh, they illegally crossed the porous borders in the district and started residing at a local house at Majdia faking them as Indian citizens.
