Declared 'unsafe', building near DC’s office in Chandigarh collapses

A five-decade-old commercial building near the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Chandigarh's Sector 17, which had been declared unsafe earlier, collapsed on Monday morning.

However, there was no causality in the building collapse located in the heart of the city.

Eyewitnesses said the building collapsed at around 7 a.m. The adjoining building, which was once running the famed Mehfil restaurant, has also developed cracks and is partially damaged by the caving-in of the building.

Police and fire brigade teams have arrived at the spot.

The local administration had earlier declared the building unsafe and sealed it.

This accident happened near the airport light point. Late Thursday night at 1.30 am, a high-speed BMW car went out of control and collided with a tree. The car was badly damaged in the accident. 10-year-old Amen Verma, who was driving the car, died of head injury.

At the same time, Amen's father Awake Verma, a resident of Sector-27, has suffered serious injuries. Sector-31 police station has registered a case of negligent driving against Awake Verma. Awake Verma told the police that suddenly there was some problem in the brake of the car, due to which the brake did not work and the accident happened.

A thick blanket of fog engulfed Chandigarh on Friday morning, as visibility dropped to zero in some areas, with the weather department predicting cloudy skies for the day.

Four flights were delayed due to fog and poor visibility conditions at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Chandigarh, on Friday morning.

The early morning arrival from Pune (7:55am) was delayed by more than two hours, while three departures to Delhi, Mumbai, and Goa were delayed till 10:30am today.

The Smart Bike Mobility Pvt Ltd, the company catering to the Chandigarh Smart City Limited (CSCL) project, has announced to add a fleet of 500 more smart bikes (cycles) to the existing public bike sharing (PBS) system in Chandigarh. Despite facing several challenges, the company decided to increase the fleet in order to promote the venture, claimed the company representatives.

“The company has procured 500 new smart bikes and will be deploying these at various dockings stations this week. This is to make up for the 1,400 bikes which have been damaged by miscreants, are under repair or stolen,” said Animesh, general manager, operations and marketing of the project. He further revealed that the company is also planning to relaunch the e-bikes (operated with battery) for local residents.

Christmas cheer turned into horror for the parents of a four-year-old girl when around 20 festive lights put up at Elante Mall came crashing down on her yesterday afternoon.

A major tragedy was averted as the girl escaped with a minor injury to the forehead.

This is the third mishap to have taken place at Elante this year. Three months ago, a woman and her niece had suffered injuries when a large granite slab came off a pillar and fell on them. An 11-year-old had lost his life after a toy train overturned mid-tour in the mall courtyard in June.

Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been fasting for the past 29 days for farmers' rights and lost 15 kg, reiterated on Tuesday that he would continue the fight till their demands are either accepted or the last breath.

In an appeal, while lying on a cot brought on the dais at the Khanauri protest site, bordering Haryana where farmers have been staging sit-in protest since February 13, Dallewel, whose vital organs have been deteriorating owing to fast and elderly age, said this battle should be fought in unison, indicating other states should also join the call of the protest of the farmers belonging to Punjab.

"I am well...We have to win this war unitedly," said Dallewal, 70, whose health is being monitored round the clock by a team of doctors who have already warned that the farmer leader is at risk of cardiac arrest.

On 20th December, Friday, Chandigarh traffic police released an advisory regarding AP Dhillon’s concert at Rally Ground, Sector 25 in Chandigarh on 21st December.

The police have shared a post of their official X account informing about the traffic rules. The post reads, “The general public is being informed that in view of the Live Concert of AP Dhillon on 21.12.2024 at Rally Ground, Sector 25, Chandigarh, the general public is advised to avoid the roads around Rally Ground, Sector-25.”

The post contains an image of the advisory for the general public. The advisory for audience reads, “The Chandigarh Traffic Police have issued advisory for the Singer A.P. Dhillon concert at the Sector-25 Rally Ground Saturday i.e. 21.12.2024, where traffic is likely to be affected from 04:00 PM onwards.”

Noise limit breached during Diljit concert: UT to High Court

The UT Administration has told the Punjab and Haryana High Court that the noise levels exceeded the permissible limits during Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh’s concert in the city on December 14.

In an affidavit submitted before a Division Bench, the UT said action under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and the Noise Pollution Rules had been proposed on December 16.

“During the musical event of performer Diljit Dosanjh, the noise levels were monitored at various locations and it was observed that these exceeded the limits prescribed under The Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000. The noise levels had ranged between 76.1 and 93.1 decibels against the permitted 75 at three different location. Accordingly, action under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and the 2000 rules has been proposed vide letter dated December 16.”

AP Dhillon concert venue shifted from Sector 34 to Sec 25

Taking note of inconvenience faced by local residents and businessmen during the recent concerts in Sector 34, the UT Administration has decided to shift the venue for Punjabi singer AP Dhillon’s show on December 21 to the Rally Ground in Sector 25.

Local traders and residents had complained of traffic chaos, noise pollution and loss of business during the live concerts of Punjabi singers Karan Aujla on December 7 and Diljit Dosanjh on December 14 in Sector 34. Permission for holding Dhillon’s concert at the Exhibition Ground was already granted by the administration.

Keeping in view inconvenience caused to residents by such shows, the administration has decided not to hold huge gatherings in Sector 34 in future. Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav said, “We have decided to shift the venue of AP Dhillon’s concert from Sector 34 to Sector 25 and also informed the organisers about the change of venue.”
