Death toll in Bihar Hooch tragedy rises to 24

The death toll in the hooch tragedy in Bihar's Siwan and Saran districts has mounted to 24, Director General of Police Bihar Alok Raj said on Thursday.

According to Alok Raj, 20 people have died in Siwan and four in Saran district after consuming spurious liquor on Tuesday evening.

"The deaths of 24 individuals were directly linked to the consumption of the spurious liquor and the Bihar police are handling the matter with utmost seriousness," Alok Raj said.

Delhi police's special cell in a joint operation with Mathura Police arrested another shooter of the Lawrence Bishnoi-Hashim Baba gang on Thursday in connection with the murder of a 35-year-old gym owner, officials said. The gym owner, identified as Nadir Shah, was shot dead in full public view in South Delhi on September 12.

According to the Delhi police, the accused Yogesh was the main shooter in the murder of gym operator Nadir Shah on 12 September in Greater Kailash, Delhi. "Accused Yogesh was shot in the leg before he was arrested. The encounter took place on Mathura Highway," the police said. Earlier on October 13, Delhi Police arrested another accused in connection with the case.

Mumbai customs arrested two people for allegedly trying to smuggle gold worth Rs 1.25 crore, according to officials. "Mumbai Customs Seized Gold having Net weight of 1.725 Kg valued at Rs 1.25 crores across 02 cases. Said goods were found concealed inside the body cavity of passengers as well as recovered from Airport staff," read a statement from Mumbai customs.

According to customs officials, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) trailed a passenger arriving from Dubai in Mumbai and was departing to Bangkok. "In a significant operation at Mumbai Airport on the night of October 15, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officers, acting on specific intelligence, discreetly trailed a transit passenger arriving from Dubai and departing to Bangkok.

The passenger, along with an airport staff member, was seen entering a washroom, raising suspicions," the statement added. The officials seized three pieces of 24 carat gold dust in wax form, around 1.725 kgs, provisionally valued at Rs 1.25 crores. The officials said that the pieces were concealed in the body cavity and in the undergarments of the passenger.

The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate Police on Wednesday busted a fake call centre functioning in an apartment in the Sundarpada area of Bhubaneswar.

As per reports, the raid was conducted after the police received information from the locals that some suspected people were staying in a flat in the Sundarpada area under Airfield police limits of the city and using some electronic equipment.

“It is found Prima facie that the fraudsters were running a fake call centre here. they used to send malicious links to various persons in the country and outside at this call centre. They would later dupe the victims through these links,” said Bhubaneswar DCP Pinak Mishra.

He also told media persons that electronics and other devices seized from the spot during the raid will be examined by the experts. The statements of the accused persons will also be recorded for further enquiry.

The Border Security Force (BSF) arrested three Indian farmers with 2.75 kg gold, hidden in the frames of their bicycles, near the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB) in West Bengal's Murshidabad district.

Nilotpal Kumar Pandey, DIG and Spokesperson, South Bengal Frontier, BSF said the seized gold is valued at nearly Rs 1.98 crore.

"Troops of the 73 Bn BSF, posted at the India One Border Outpost, received a specific intelligence input regarding an attempt to smuggle gold from across the border inside bicycle frames,” he said.

He added that the jawans began searching accused farmers returning from work on their farmlands close to the International Border.

The Border Security Force (BSF) has busted an infiltration racket along the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB) in West Bengal's Murshidabad district and arrested four Bangladeshi nationals and an Indian tout.

The arrests were made on Tuesday as the Bangladeshis were carrying Aadhaar cards, allegedly made in Bangladesh. The infiltrators were planning to travel to Chennai, a senior official said.

"At around 3.35 p.m. on Tuesday, troops of the 73 Bn BSF, posted at the Bamnabad Border Outpost in Murshidabad, spotted suspicious movement near the International Border. On moving closer, they came across five persons attempting to cross over into India. The BSF jawans ordered them to retreat but they tried to force their way across. When the troops adopted stronger measures, the gang dispersed and took shelter in the tall grass. A Quick Response Team (QRT) rushed to the spot and brought them out from the vegetation," said Nilotpal Kumar Pandey, DIG and spokesperson, South Bengal Frontier, BSF.

Nadia district police in West Bengal, on Wednesday afternoon, arrested a youth in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a woman in her early twenties, whose half-charred and semi-nude body was recovered earlier this morning.

A senior district police official said that first, the investigating officials tracked the identity of the victim and then contacted her family members. “On the basis of their complaints, we have arrested a youth. For the sake of investigation we are unable to reveal the youth’s identity as of now,” said a district police official.

According to statements given by the family members of the victim, she went out of her residence at around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, though she did not inform her family members about where she was going.

Her family members started searching for her as she did not return home till late; they did not inform the local police station immediately.

Three more persons have been arrested in connection with the stone-pelting incident at a Ganesh pandal in Surat's Sayedpura in Gujarat on September 8 taking the total number of arrested to 33 people, said police on Tuesday.

Six minors were also nabbed in the case.

The latest arrests were made based on CCTV footage, said the officials.

The stone-pelting occurred during the Ganeshotsav in Sayedpura, where mobs also attacked the police. Five police personnel, including an officer, were injured in the incident.

A young woman was allegedly sexually assaulted by an auto-rickshaw driver in Hyderabad in the early hours of Tuesday.

The victim complained to Gachibowli Police Station that the accused took her to an isolated place near a school in Masjid Banda area and raped her.

The 29-year-old private employee, who had returned from Chennai and alighted at Lingampally station at 2.15 a.m., boarded an autorickshaw to go to Nanakramguda where she lives.

The woman told police that the accused tried to strangulate her when she screamed for help. He also snatched her handbag which contained cash and an identity card.

70 kg drugs seized in Myanmar

Myanmar authorities have seized 70 kg of ketamine in eastern Myanmar's Shan state, the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control (CCDAC) reported on Friday.

Acting on a tip-off, anti-narcotics police intercepted a vehicle in Tachileik town of Shan state on Thursday and seized the drugs, Xinhua news agency reported quoting the CCDAC.

Two suspects onboard the car were arrested for the case. Further investigation was underway.

Earlier on September 28 Myanmar's naval authorities seized 1.478 million stimulant tablets in western Myanmar's Rakhine state.
