MC Chandigarh conducts drives against plastic carry bags, segregation & litering in public place: issued challans to 165 violators*

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation on Saturday carried out special drives against plastic carry bags, C&D waste, Horticulture waste, segregation of waste and littering by the residents and eating joints.
 
Keeping in view the direct observation  of Swachh Survekshan in next few days, The MC Commissioner Sh. Amit Kumar, IAS formed various teams of Sanitation department to check violatons of the Municipal Solid Waste rules in the city. During the inspection, the teams headed by chief sanitation inspectors, carried out in different markets throughout city, many shopkeepers using and storing plastic carry bags were found violating the MSW rules.
 
The officials issued challan to the offenders and warned them of strict action next time. Total 165 violators have been issued challans including which 43 challans were issued for selling/using plastic carry bags,  and 68 challans were issued for sanitation/littering in public place, 52 challans were issued for segregationof waste and one each challan for C&D waste and Horticulture waste. Challans ranging between Rs. 500 to Rs. 20,000 have been imposed on different categories of defaulters.
 
 
While speaking about the special drive, the Commissioner said that the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh finds a unique way to challan violators who throw garbage in open or public space. He said the the inspection teams searched proofs of defaulters from the garbage dumps and found payment slips or other relevant proofs of the food joints or individual citizens from different dumsps in public place. He said today after getting the similar proofs,  the teams backtracked 12 such violators. They have been issued challans against littering in public place under Municipal Solid Waste rules.
 
The Commissioner said that the MCC would continue this drive in future as well and all shopkeepers as well as the garbage lifters have been advised to follow the guidelines under Municipal Solid Waste rules. He also appealed to the citizens of Chandigarh to join hands with Municipal Corporation for better management of Solid Waste in city beautiful.
