Desh Bhagat University Hosts Lecture on Drug Addiction and AIDS Awareness

Desh Bhagat University recently held an extension lecture focused on the critical issues of drug addiction and AIDS awareness. The event commenced with a ceremonial lamp lighting by Chancellor Dr. Zora Singh, Pro-Chancellor Dr. Tejinder Kaur and Advisor to the Chancellor Dr. Varinder Singh. Satish Kumar, NSS Coordinator, opened the session by highlighting the increasing challenges posed by drug addiction and its connection to AIDS. Citing WHO statistics, he mentioned that in 2023, 42.3 million people succumbed to AIDS, and 39.3 million continue to live with HIV. He stressed that the rising drug abuse among youth in Punjab significantly contributes to the spread of the virus, which is primarily transmitted through unprotected sexual contact and the sharing of needles. The lecture featured comprehensive presentations by several experts. Dr. Eric Kwasi Ellusion delivered insights on the dangers of drug addiction, explaining how substance use disorders impair brain function and behavior, often leading individuals to depend on higher doses over time. Dr. Satyam, Associate Professor of Ayurveda, further discussed how drug addiction is a key factor in the transmission of HIV, emphasizing the importance of early detection, treatment with antiretroviral therapy (ART), and debunking common myths about casual contact with HIV-positive individuals. The event, attended by NSS programme officers Gurjit Singh (Social Science) and other faculty members.The session underscored the need for increased awareness, early testing, and preventive measures to curb both drug addiction and HIV/AIDS, urging the community and students to adopt proactive health practices.
