Chip major Qualcomm to lay off hundreds of employees in US

Chip giant Qualcomm is reportedly laying off at least 226 employees in the US later this year as part of its business diversification strategy.

As per reports, the upcoming layoffs by Qualcomm on November 12 were announced in a California Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice. The layoffs were first reported by The San Diego Union-Tribune.

The layoffs will reportedly affect employees at 16 facilities across San Diego, including the company’s headquarters.

A Qualcomm spokesperson was quoted as saying that their leading technology and product portfolio “has positioned us to execute on our diversification strategy”.

Indian equity indices opened in green on Friday following positive cues from Asian and US markets.

At 9.46 a.m., Sensex was up 82 points or 0.10 per cent at 83,267 and Nifty was up 40 points or 0.16 per cent at 25,455.

Buying was also seen in the midcap and smallcap stocks. Nifty midcap 100 index was up 313 points or 0.53 per cent at 59,665 and Nifty smallcap 100 index was up 137 points or 0.72 per cent at 19,282.

Almost all sectoral indices were trading in the green. Auto, PSU Bank, fin service, FMCG, metal, realty, energy and infra were major gainers.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned Tuesday's terrorist attack in Bamako, Mali.

"The secretary-general strongly condemns the terrorist attack in Bamako, Mali, on September 17," said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN chief, in a statement on Thursday.

The statement said that Guterres extended his sincere condolences to the families of the victims as well as to the transitional government and the people of Mali and wished a speedy recovery to those injured, including one UN guard unit member, news agency reported.

Venezuela's designation to the board's Latin American and Caribbean regional group took place during the 68th IAEA General Conference in Vienna, Austria, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan posted on social media Telegram on Thursday.

"Our Bolivarian Peace Diplomacy proudly assumes this role, with the objective of continuing to promote the use of technologies and nuclear energy in favour of peace and human development," Gil said on Thursday.

India to get Centre of Excellence in quantum and 6G technologies

In an effort to bolster India’s position in the sphere of quantum and 6G technologies, the Telecom Centre of Excellence (TCOE) India and Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Karnataka have joined hands to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in quantum technology and related areas.

The centre, headquartered at VTU-Visvesvaraya Research and Innovation Foundation (VRIF) Bangalore, aims to accelerate India’s progress across these key sectors and is part of the 100-day programme, according to the Ministry of Communications.

The CoE is designed on a hub-and-spoke model for innovation with VTU-VRIF and TCOE India serving as the central hub.

According to the government, leveraging the intellectual and infrastructural strengths of VTU’s 228 affiliated colleges, the CoE will act as a key facilitator in research and development.

The kingpin of a multi-crore online trading scam - Bishal Phukan was sent to three days of police custody, officials said on Thursday.

A senior police official said that the investigating team believes that more details related to the huge financial scam amounting to Rs 2,200 crore can be unearthed by interrogating Bishal Phukan and that is why police sought his custody.

Moreover, the police searched a few places in Dibrugarh town on Thursday to seize the properties of Phukan, the controversial Assamese actress Sumi Borah and her husband Tarkik Borah.

Borah along with her husband were lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail after the court sent them to judicial custody.

A triple talaq case was reported from the Tonk area of Rajasthan on Thursday after a victim lodged a case against her husband in the Kotwali area.

A few months back another case of triple talaq was reported from the same district.

Police inspector Bhanwar Lal Vaishnav said that the victim woman, who was a resident of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, was married to one Qaiser alias Furqan from Tonk city on 10 June 2003 as per the Muslim customs. In the report, the victim said that her husband and in-laws started harassing her over trivial things right after marriage which caused mental and physical depression to the victim.
