Tokyo stocks rise over weaker yen, US gains

Tokyo stocks rise over weaker yen, US gains

Tokyo stocks gained ground on Tuesday following a plunge on the previous day as bargain hunters targeted the dip, pushing up the index.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, gained 1.93 per cent, or 732.42 points, to close at 38,651.97.

The market was also buoyed by a weakening yen, with the yen trading at around 144 per dollar, as well as gains on Wall Street, reports news agency.

Despite the rebound, concerns over the new government's economic policies led to some profit-taking after the initial buying spree.

Shigeru Ishiba, leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was officially elected the country's prime minister on Tuesday after winning a majority of votes in both houses of parliament. The market has been closely watching how his economic policies will fold out.

Sophie Molineux feels 'nervousness' on her Women's T20 WC return

Australia all-rounder Sophie Molineux is a little bit nervous about the Women's T20 World Cup in UAE following her return to the national team earlier this year.

The two-time World Cup winner spent over two years out of the team due to serious foot and knee injuries between 2021 and 2024. She missed the 2022 ODI World Cup, 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2023 T20 World Cup for Australia. As the tournament begins on October 3, the all-rounder is ready to play any role for her side.

"I haven't been around for a few years in terms of World Cups so there is a little bit of nervousness that I'm feeling at the moment," cricket.com.au quoted Molineux as saying. "But that's cool, and it's a T20 World Cup and there's so much could happen in that space," she added.

The 26-year-old returned to the Australian team against South Africa earlier this year and has not looked back. She bagged the Player of the Series award against Bangladesh in the T20I series in March. However, a rib injury interrupted her World Cup preparations but she returned to take on key overs in the powerplay and at the death in the recent T20I series against New Zealand.

India’s diamond imports drop 54 pc in August, country remains global dominant player

India’s diamond imports saw a 54 per cent decline in August compared to the same month last year, as the country remains a dominant player in the global diamond industry, responsible for producing 95 per cent of the world’s polished diamonds, a report showed on Tuesday.

As per preliminary data from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), India imported 5.6 million carats of diamonds during this period, underscoring the ongoing global shifts within the diamond market.

India’s imports of lab-grown rough diamonds, which are increasingly significant in the global market, were valued at $119 million in August, down 12 per cent from the previous year.

In terms of value, however, the narrative differs, with the imports for August 2024 estimated at $672 million.

This figure marks a 49 per cent increase in value compared to August 2023, reflecting adjustments in pricing and demand for higher-value stones, as well as global supply chain shifts affecting both natural and synthetic diamonds, according to the data.
