Chandigarh, March 20

In a statement addressing recent developments, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sondh emphasized the Punjab Government's dedication to the welfare of farmers while ensuring that the larger public interest is safeguarded. He clarified that the removal of blockades from Punjab’s highways was carried out with utmost humility and respect for the farmers, without any confrontation.

"Our government respects the sacrifices of our farmers and has always stood with them. The highways were cleared only to alleviate the immense hardships faced by the common people, including delays in ambulances, stranded students and NRIs, and disrupted trade routes critical to Punjab’s economy," Minister Sondh stated.

Reflecting on the historic farmers' movement against the three controversial farm laws, Sondh highlighted AAP's unwavering support during the agitation. "While other parties like Akali Dal and Congress remained absent or even sided with the central government, AAP stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the farmers, providing every possible assistance, from basic facilities to unwavering political support," he said.

He expressed concern over the public’s behavior on social media, citing instances of offensive language and toxic discourse. "It is disheartening to see such negativity in a state known for its rich cultural heritage and values. We must unite and maintain the dignity of our discourse," Sondh urged.

The Minister also raised critical questions about the strategy behind highway blockades. He noted that while the fight was against the central government, the closure of Punjab's own lifelines—borders and highways—caused significant losses to the state's economy and disrupted the lives of ordinary citizens.

"The closure of our highways led to skyrocketing costs for logistics and daily essentials, hurting every section of society. Businesses suffered, and the perception of Punjab as an investor-friendly state took a hit on both national and international levels," Sondh explained.

He further appealed to the farmers and all stakeholders to avoid road blockades in the future and to conduct protests in ways that do not inconvenience the public. "Democratic rights such as protests must be exercised responsibly. Let us not hinder the progress of our state and instead work together for a prosperous Punjab," he added.

Highlighting the government’s ongoing efforts against drug smuggling and addiction, Sondh noted that rehabilitated youth would need employment opportunities. He stressed the importance of fostering industrial growth and trade in Punjab to ensure a brighter future for its youth.

Concluding his statement, Minister Sondh made a heartfelt appeal: "Let us leave behind negativity and focus on unity and progress. Together, we can lead Punjab towards unprecedented growth and development."
