Punjab Police arrest drug inspector for smuggling, money laundering

Punjab Police’s Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) has arrested Drug Inspector Shishan Mittal for his involvement in facilitating drug smuggling operations connected to illegal pharmaceuticals, medical stores and laundering the drug money in the ‘benami’ accounts in names of his relatives, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Friday.

The development came about a month after the police froze 24 bank accounts, with the total amount reaching Rs 7.09 crore, linked to the accused, besides seizing a huge amount of cash and foreign currency during a series of coordinated raids conducted at different locations in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.

In addition to this, two bank lockers were also seized.

The National Investigating Team (NIA) conducted raids at the premises of relatives and aides of Member of Parliament and Sikh radical Amritpal Singh, who is lodged in Dibrugarh Jail under the National Security Act, in connection with a terrorist and gangster network.

The raids were also linked to a 2023 incident in which pro-Khalistan supporters protested outside the High Commission of India in Canada’s Ottawa and an attack on the Indian High Commission in London.

The NIA raid was conducted at several places in Amritsar, comprising his uncle Pragat Singh Sandhu’s house and workshop and his brother-in-law Amanjot Singh's residence. Amanjot is residing in Canada.

Simultaneously raids were also conducted in Moga, Gurdaspur and Jalandhar districts.

Punjab Police arrest drug inspector for facilitating illegal pharmaceuticals

In a breakthrough, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of Punjab Police on Friday said it has arrested a drug inspector from Mohali for facilitating smuggling operations connected to illegal pharmaceuticals, medical stores and laundering the money.

The accused was in touch with drug smugglers lodged inside the jail and facilitated their network outside, a post on X quoting Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said.

Serious financial irregularities have been observed, whereby ANTF identified and froze 24 bank accounts with Rs 7.09 crore. In addition to this, two bank lockers were seized, he said.

The ANTF recovered Rs 1.49 crore in cash, 260 gm of gold and foreign currency. Furthermore, substantial assets acquired through the proceeds of illegal activities were identified, including real estate valued at Rs 2.40 crore in Zirakpur and Dabwali towns.

The NIA team conducted a raid at Sultanwind area of Amritsar today and one person has been taken into custody. The person taken into custody has been identified as Harjinder Singh resident of Gurnam Nagar Gali No. 6 Mandir Wala Bazar. According to the information received, the NIA team was looking for her son Prince, but when he was not found, his father was taken into custody.
